Meet Pinar Unsal - Kubixer Interview Series
Meet Pinar: a woman that wanted to become a doctor, a pediatrician specifically, when she was small. At the age of 12, she started working to ‘earn her own pocket money’. She took jobs like local newspaper deliverer taking her bicycle around town, worked at a printing house of a newspaper, on a weekend street market selling bread - and later on as a student, she worked as a tutor and in an advertising agency near her campus. It wasn’t until she studied a year abroad in 1999, when she finally knew what she wanted to do as a profession. By using the internet more and more, it slowly grabbed her interest and when she was able to attend an e-commerce class, she knew that this was the industry she wanted to be in. Back in Germany a year later she got an internship at a technology startup doing permission marketing, a couple of years later moved to Gibraltar to work at another online business, and in 2005 found her dream job at Google Dublin; before founding Kubix Digital in 2007.
How does a typical day at the office look like for you?
At the moment at Kubix we work 3 days at the office, and 2 days remote. Normally my working days start early. I wake up before 7 am get ready and head to the office or to my remote area depending on my schedule. Normally I start by reading some news on Twitter, Linkedin, and other platforms together with my big cup of coffee. The tasks for the day I usually already have planned the day before, so I can start immediately as I’m a morning person and I like being productive till noon. I don’t move around so much and can sit at my desk for hours (I know that’s not the healthiest way, but I have decided to change this by adding morning sport now to my schedule. Let’s see how that will go).
The morning hours and most parts of the afternoon I use for checking our client's accounts and planning their campaigns. We have project team meetings weekly where we discuss optimization ideas and next steps for our client's accounts. I speak with most clients regularly on the phone as we have been able to reduce the number of face-to-face meetings to be more efficient. Sometimes I have meetings with new potential customers. The rest of the day and the evening hours after dinner I write or translate blog posts, think about the next marketing initiatives, or work on organizational tasks.
What are some of the projects are you currently working on?
On the client-side I’m working on projects; with Mavi, Deichmann, Metro being the biggest ones. Especially, the Mavi account has grown a lot lately with also taking over the SEA-account management of the German account and soon Europe too.
Looking at our insides operations I have some fun tasks like HR-related stuff to do, accounting paperwork, Kubix Digital related marketing work. At the moment my main focus here is developing my public speaking skills that I will be able to test for the first time in front of a bigger crowd now on September 13 at brightonSEO.
Give 3 words to describe working at Kubix.
If you could add one thing to the office, what would it be?
What is your biggest accomplishment at work?
We have been selected as “Best Small Integrates Search Agency” in 2017 and 2019 at the European Search Awards. This makes me really proud as it’s so much hard work to showcase your successes over the year and write an application for these awards to be considered even as a finalist. Being a winner in such a competitive category twice really is outstanding and I consider it as a big accomplishment.
What excites you the most about your work at the moment?
Expanding internationally and work on our good agency reputation globally.
What’s on your bucket list?
Travel to Australia & New Zealand.
What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
I have lots of energy and rarely get tired. That’s why most of the time when I go out (which doesn't happen so much anymore), I don’t go home before the place shuts down and get mad at my friends that want to leave!
Among your friends or family, what are you famous for?
For organizing the best parties, dinners & other surprises.
If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
BE ON TIME! I hate it when someone makes me wait - it absolutely drives me crazy as I always arrive earlier or on time (I’m a typical Virgo).
What would you sing at Karaoke night?
Bonnie Tyler, total eclipse of the heart.
Last: What is something that you are proud of?
I’m very proud that I’m part of a charity runners group, Adım Adım, for more than 10 years now. And, that I was able to continue running for great causes now also, for the 5th year together with my little daughter (5). I’m proud of her how she turned out and that I’m able to raise her as a sporty & caring person with a strong personality that already is pretty aware of society.
